The Ancient City

See the architectural and cultural highlights of Thailand in one afternoon at the Ancient City. The vision of Thai businessman Lek Viriyaphant, the Ancient City features scale models of some of Thailand's outstanding architectural gems from its earliest times through to the current era. Here and there a genuine period building has been reassembled amongst the reproductions. Everything has been assembled on a layout that resembles the outline of the map of current day Thailand, with the exhibits placed in the location as they would appear on the map. At a ratio of 1:3, the models are quite grand, and some are complete reproductions ofbuildings that either no longer exist or lie in a ruined state. Examples cover all periods of history and their distinct styles, and all the regions. Here and there small examples of traditional domestic architecture are found such as a scaled down market town - where the arts and crafts and regional foods can be seen being prepared and for purchase. For the visitor short on time, Ancient City provides an introduction to Thailand within an afternoon.

Ayuthaya and Bang Pa-In Palace

An excursion to the former royal capital of Ayutthaya and the Bang Pa-In Summer Palace. You will visit the ruins of Ayutthaya and the restored Summer Palace. Phra Nakorn Sri Ayutthaya served as the Siamese capital from 1350-1767. It had been one of the most splendid cities of the Orient and was sacked by Burmese invaders and abandoned by the Siamese, who re-established themselves first at Thonburi and then at Bangkok. Then, you will visit the Historical Park to view the still impressive ruins of Wat Yai Chai Mongkol, Wat Panan Cheon and the distinctive triple chedis of Wat Phra Sri Sanphet. Also visit the Summer Palace at Bang Pa-In, about 10 km south of Ayutthaya. Some of the earlier kings used this area as a summer retreat, but the present buildings date mainly from the 19th century when the habit of residing there was revived. There are examples of European and Chinese architectural styles, as well as the Thai pavillion of Phra Thinang Aisawan Thippaya-art. Languages English

Bridge over the River Kwai

A visit to the scenic province of Kanchanaburi, revealing its role in the history of the Pacific War. Kanchanaburi Province, one of the largest and hottest of all Thai provinces, lying to the west of Bangkok and adjacent to Myanmar separated mostly by a mountainous border broken by the Three Pagodas Pass. Kanchanaburi sits on the banks of the Kwae Yai and Kwae Noi rivers, surrounded by limestone outcrops and fields of sugar cane. One less pleasant aspect of its history was the prisoner of war camp during the Second World War, when this area was the site of a railway line intended to stretch throughout British Burma to India. Visit the Jeath war museum, which is housed in the same sort of huts the POW's used and is filled with exhibits telling their story. Visit the War Cemetery as well as the Bridge on the River Kwai, restored after the war and still carries the railway today. Take a ride along a pleasant section of the unpleasantly named Death Railway. Languages English Others Optional long tail boat from Jeath war Museum to Bridge River Kwai.
