Rome underground: the Catacombs
The idea is to offer a service that is interested in transferring tourists from the neuralgic points of the city of Rome to the catacombs using a methane Shuttle Bus with an onboard audio guide, with the purpose of reconciling the traditional nature of our tours with more ambitious ideas of sustainable tourism and environmental protection. Our package will allow you to reach and visit the catacombs , which are one of the largest one in Rome and where you can visit 17 km of tunnels and corridors divided into 4 different levels, for a total of 150,000 burials, and a semi subterranean Basilica. By visiting this site you will have the opportunity to get to know more information about some aspects of the life of the Christian communities of the early centuries, their faith in the resurrection and eternal life, admiring its testimony, that remained untouched over the centuries in symbolic decorations of stone fragments and magnificent frescoes, a sign of the relationship with God and of the cult of the martyrs buried in this cemetery. • Domitilla Catacombs The Domitilla catacombs are the largest and the oldest underground cemetery in Rome, part of the property of Flavia Domitilla dated to 120 A.D. In the Flavi family, in the first century, there were two female figures named Flavia Domitilla: - the first is the wife of the consul of 95 Flavio Clemente; - the second is the granddaughter of the consul himself, venerated as a martyr in the fourth century. The catacomb therefore owes its name to one of the two Domitillas, of the family of the Flavi, converted to Christianity and therefore persecuted. The frescoes preserved are an expression of the faith of the early Christians. In the heart of the catacomb there is the only semi underground Basilica in Rome that is dedicated to the Black Martyrs and Achilleus, and to the Saint Peter’s daughter. • Saint Callixtus Catacombs They were the official cemetery of the Church of Rome in the 3rd century. In them were buried about half a million Christians, including dozens of martyrs and sixteen pontiffs. They take their name from the deacon San Callisto who, at the beginning of the 3rd century, was appointed by Pope Zeffirino to the administration of the cemetery. Since 1930 they have been entrusted to the care of the Salesians of Don Bosco The underground cemetery consists of several areas. The Crypt of the Popes is the most sacred and important place of these catacombs, called "the little Vatican" because there were buried 9 popes and probably 8 dignitaries of the Church of the 3rd century. Along the walls are the original Greek inscriptions of 5 popes. On 4 tombstones, next to the name of the pontiff there is the title of "bishop", because the Pope was considered the head of the Church of Roma • Saint Sebastian Catacombs The site, affected by funerary presences since the 1st century A.D. and the development of a vast Christian cemetery from the 3rd century A.D., was originally called ad catacumbas ( "near the cavities"), for the presence in the area of pits of pozzolana. It was precisely the complex of San Sebastiano, which became one of the most important in Rome over the centuries, that gave the name of "catacomb" to all the other underground Christian cemeteries. on the surface there is a basilica , originally called Basilica Apostolorum, built in the first half of the fourth century over a more ancient sanctuary linked to the memory of the apostles Peter and Paul; only later the church was dedicated to the martyr Sebastian, buried in the catacomb below at the beginning of the 4th century. Below the Basilica of San Sebastiano there are two complexes characterized by beautiful frescoes in excellent state of conservation, traditionally called "Villa Grande" and "Villa Piccola".

Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatin Hill Walking Tour - Skip The Line
Learn about the history of the Roman Empire, whose fundamental teachings helped shape the modern world as we know it Highlights - Explore the heart of Ancient Rome - Learn about the characters who shaped the history of the Roman Empire - Priority access Embark on a journey through time. Transport your mind to an era whose remnants still surround you to this very day. Learn about the incredible history and horrors of the Eternal City as you explore the centre of Ancient Rome. It is hard to imagine what these iconic landmarks would have looked like in their prime, but with priority entrance to the archaeological site and complimentary headsets, you will gain a better understanding of the area with the help from your experienced and professional guide. Your guided 'Passeggiata' will include a visit to; - Palatine Hill It is thought that this area is where it all began. In Rome there is a very fine line between myth and historical fact. According to Roman mythology, twin brothers Remus and Romulus were abandoned by their parents on the hill and discovered and nursed by a wolf before being found by a shepherd. Legend has it that when they became adults they decided to build a city where the wolf had found them. After quarrelling about the location, Remus was said to have been murdered by his brother, thus leaving Romulus as the founder of the city to which he gave his name. Over a hundred years ago archaeologist Rodolfo Lanciani, excavated a site on the hill and uncovered the remains of an Iron Age settlement dating back to 900 BC giving evidence to the existence of the early founders of Rome. - Colosseum The Colosseum is the world’s largest amphitheatre, built by the Romans in 80 AD. More than 50,000 people would have gathered here to watch gladiatorial contests and many other kinds of public spectacles. Known also as the Flavian, its name was appropriately given as it was built on the site where once stood a 115-foot-tall bronze statue of the emperor Colossus of Nero. Whilst visiting this giant amphitheatre, take some time to consider the discrimination in Roman society and the fate of the fighters in the gruesome blood sport at the gladiator’s playground. - Roman forum In its heyday, the Roman Forum was the very heart of the ancient world, crowded with people from all corners of the empire. From elections, public speeches, gladiator matches, and even criminal trials, it was from this very location that the Romans transformed civilisation. Languages Monolingual English, Spanish and German. Bilingual French and Portuguese.

Next to Campo de’ Fiori we will admire the magical charm of Piazza Farnese, which takes its name from the imposing Palazzo Farnese. A few steps from Palazzo Farnese stands Palazzo Spada. The building is worth a stop thanks to the brilliance of forced prospective introduced by the famous architect Borromini. The arcade courtyard is an optical illusion, in which diminishing rows of columns and a rising floor create the illusion of a gallery 37 meters long (it is 8 meters). Proceed then to Piazza Navona, one of the most famous squares in the world. Its original shape repeats with extreme faithfulness the perimeter of the ancient stadium of Domitian built in 89 A.D. The symbol of the square is the “Fountains of Four Rivers”, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini and competing with Borromini’s famed church S. Agnese in Agone. The Pantheon, a building of ancient Rome, has been well preserved and is a true masterpiece of architecture. Once inside, our expert guide will be glad to give a short explanation about the history and the architectural secrets of the building. In the centre of the square there is a fountain with a mist linear plan designed by Giacomo della Porta. From Piazza della Rotonda the distance is short to Piazza Colonna, thus named after the 2nd century marble column celebrating the victories of the Emperor Marcus Aurelius over the Germanic populations. At present the square is the centre of the Italian political life, which gravitates around Palazzo Chigi, the seat of the Prime Minister. We then cross Via del Corso and in just 5 minutes we are at the Trevi Fountain, a true masterpiece and certainly the most famous and spectacular fountain in Rome. The last stop of our itinerary will be Piazza di Spagna, (Spanish Steps). Extremely original in shape, it has always been the meeting place for travelers coming from all over the world.
