This three-hour stroll takes us along the Naples' waterfront, exploring the political and social history of the city from its Greek origins as Neapolis (the new city) to modern times. It is led by either an art or social historian, and, while exploring rich scholarly themes, attempts to paint a realistic picture of life in Naples today, in all of its chaotic beauty. The walk begins with an exploration of Castel Nuovo, the political fulcrum of the city during antiquity, when there was an important commercial port in the area (some Roman ships have recently been discovered nearby), up through the high medieval period when Petrarch and Boccaccio were guests here. We will also observe the other Neapolitan castle, Castle dell'Ovo (literally, the egg castle), which also has a history stretching back to Roman times and has had many reincarnations, most notably as a prison under the Normans. With a view of the bay of Naples as a backdrop, we will push on to the Palazzo Reale, designed by Domenico Fontana, which served as the royal palace during the reign of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. Boasting an overwrought imperial-style of interior decoration, the royal apartments attest to the wealth and power of the city during Bourbon rule. Our itinerary can vary at this point,turning in to the dense Spanish district and its artist treasures, such as the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli, or continuing on Via Toledo towards the historic center of the city. Construction of this sumptuous palace began in 1752, when the Bourbon King Charles III of Naples commissioned the architect Vanvitelli to build a palace larger than the famous French estate in Versailles. The architect was up to the challenge, and built the largest 18th century palace in Europe and the largest royal residence in the world. The "Reggia" covers 47,000 square meters, including 1,200 rooms, 34 staircases, and three square kilometers of surrounding park and gardens. The Royal Palace of Caserta was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was the setting for a number of scenes in the Star Wars films.

We will begin with a stroll through the dense historical center of Naples, all the while discussing some of the most important culinary traditions of the city, how they were born and how Neapolitan cuisine has evolved throughout the centuries. You will discuss the influence of the Spanish and Norman domination on Neapolitan food, as well as different preparation techniques. As we wind our way through the characteristic neighborhoods of via Toledo and Spaccanapoli, we will stop at some of the oldest and most traditional cafes and pastry shops. Depending on the time of the year and your interest, we will taste traditional Neapolitan snacks and sweets such as taralli, baba' al rhum and sfogliatelle. After this enticing appetizer, we will visit one of Naples' most traditional pizzerias. Here you will be given the ingredients and tools to make your own pizza Napoletana. A trained pizzaiolo will supervise your work and give you advice for achieving the perfect dough consistency and the right sauce-spreading and mozzarella-sprinkling techniques.
