There are plenty of photo opportunities on the shores of Esthwaite Water, where Potter penned her Peter the Rabbit children’s stories and which inspired a number of Wordsworth’s poems. Continue to Hill Top Farm, Potter’s home, which she bequeathed to the nation. Visit this quaint homestead and wander the gardens (the house closes on Fridays but the grounds remain open). The nearby picturesque village of Hawkshead, which is dominated by a historic hillside church, is the next stop. Cross the Yew Tree Valley, famed for its herds of roe deer, before reaching Coniston Water. This scenic lake served as the inspiration for the children’s novel, Swallows and Amazons. Enjoy a photo stop at Yew Tree Farm, which was the setting for the film, Miss Potter.
