Cruise to Princes' islands: walk in Büyükada - Small Group
Come and explore the idyllic island of Buyukada, a place where time has stood still. Formerly a place of exile and retreat, the island prohibits the use of motorised vehicles, meaning that visitors can enjoy its natural beauty and magnificent panoramic landscapes in blissful peace. Take a horse-drawn phaeton to ride around and appreciate the charm that has been attracting prosperous Turkish, Greek, Jewish and Armenian visitors for generations. Buyukada, literally meaning Big Island in Turkish, is the largest of the nine so-called Princes’ Islands in the Sea of Marmara, near Istanbul, with an area of about 5 square kilometres. It is home to a number of important historical buildings, such as the Agia Yorgi Church and Monastery dating back to the 6th century. A convent on the island was the place to which Byzantine empresses were exiled; after his deportation from the Soviet Union in 1929, it was also the place where Leon Trotsky stayed for four years, and the house where he lived still stands today. As you ride around the island on your horse-drawn phaeton you will see churches, palaces, Ottoman-era mansions, convents and many other places of interest. The aptly named Splendid Palace Hotel, dating from 1908, still stands near the port as a reminder of the island’s enduring appeal as a destination for discerning travellers. Your expert guide will ensure you learn about Buyukada’s rich history and notable residents. Prepare to be enchanted by the special charms of this beautiful island. Languages English
