Pop in and you will be amazed by the variety of homemade umbrellas and parasols in fantastic colours and painted in floral designs. The excursion continues in the Sankampaeng district, which is home to a myriad of handicraft industries. Silk is a key product, the basis of those gorgeous traditional outfits. Thai silk is renowned worldwide for its coarser weave that absorbs the bright colours used in dying the fabric. Watch local women weave the silk on looms; their rapid-fire fingers intertwining the gleaming thread as the looms gently knock to a rhythm. It’s hypnotic to watch and the resulting silk fabric is one-of-a-kind. Cotton weavers are also prominent as well as craftsman creating silverware and jewellery, carving wood furniture and sculpting pottery. Thai laquerware is particularly unusual with its glossy black base and details in gold. Admire and maybe purchase some Thai celadon pottery. The sage-green pottery originated in China and later spread to Thailand where the craftsman added their own Thai touch. See how little has changed in hundreds of years. Just like back then, quality handicrafts require artistry, creativity and time. This is tour that offers flexibility. Let your guide know which crafts interest you. Meeting/pick-up point: Hotels lobby in Chiang Mai. Duration: 4 hours, approximately. Start or opening time: Morning tour at 8:30am. Afternoon tour at 1:30pm. End or closing time: Morning tour at 12:30pm. Afternoon tour at 5:30pm.

Half Day Doi Suthep Temple With Meo Doi Pui

Discover one of Thailand’s most sacred and extravagant temples during a visit to Wat Phra Thad Doi Suthep. The temple dating back to 1383 houses a holy relic of Buddha, murals, shrines, pagodas, even one of the world’s largest gongs. And, yes, you can give it a whack. First, you’ll have to arrive at the temple that is perched at the top of a monumental staircase bordered by statues of seven-headed Naga serpents. If you’d rather not take the 300-step staircase built by King Ku Na, there’s the modern-day option of the funicular. A golden spire will greet you as you ascend toward the temple that remains a working Buddhist monastery. Wander inside the enclave that surrounds the spire and admire the murals, shrines and a copy of the Emerald Buddha (the original is in Bangkok). Check out the White Elephant Shrine just outside the enclave to learn the legend behind the temple’s founding. Monks, an elephant and a shoulder bone that glowed, disappeared and moved are just a few of the characters behind this temple’s factual or fictional founding. We’ll also head up to the temple’s viewing terrace to relish in the panoramic views of Chiang Mai and the surrounding countryside. Before returning to Chiang Mai, we’ll get to know the locals and how they live on our final stop: a Meo hill tribe village. Languages English.

Evening Khantoke Dinner And Dances From Hotel Inside Chiang Mai City Only

Stimulate your sense and taste buds at this traditional khantoke dinner and dance extravaganza. Khantoke is the name of a low dining table but has come to also mean this traditional northern Thai style of eating that dates back to the Lanna kingdom (13th to 18th centuries). Take off your shoes; settle onto a floor mat and, together with your dining companions, you will sample a vast variety of northern dishes. A feast for your eyes and ears is next served during a dance performance. Marvel at the grace and precision of regional dances. Dating back to the ancient kingdom of Siam, these dances were performed for royalty. You are king or queen for the evening and will be awestruck by the dancers’ costumes and elegance. Twisting and twirling hand movements characterise Thai dance. No dance displays this prowess more beautifully than the Fingernail Dance. Watch this slow, stately dance in which the dancers don elongated fingernails. Thai martial arts influence the Sword Dance. Be amazed at the dancers’ ability to balance swords on nearly every available limb. Don’t try this dance at home. You will, however, have the chance to participate in the Circle Dance, which doesn’t involve swords and might just help you burn off that second or third helping from dinner. Northern Thai hill tribes will close the evening with a sampling of their traditional dances. Satiated and satisfied, you will return to your hotel having experienced a truly Thai evening. Half Day Chiang Mai Temples

Uncover the spiritual side of Chiang Mai with visits to the city’s most important temples. This half-day tour will take you to the striking Wat Suan Dok, the historic Wat Phra Singh, the heavenly Wat Jedyod, the indestructible Wat Chedi Luang’s and the ancient Wat Chiang Mun. Wat Suan Dok has a collection of gleaming white chedi, which are Buddhist mausoleums. The white spires contrast dramatically with the mountains in the background making the spot a favourite among photographers. The ashes of Chiang Mai’s royal families are interred here. Admire at the 14th century Wat Phra Singh, a stellar example of Lanna architecture displayed in high-pitch, three-tier roofs and elaborate carved wood gables. This temple is revered for its Buddha statue. The Phra Singh, which gives the temple its name, is based on a lion Buddha yet has many human characteristics. Also visit Wat Jedyod, the temple of seven spires, and Wat Chedi Luang, which remains a sacred spot despite suffering damage during an earthquake. Its spire collapsed in a 1545 tremour yet its destruction seems to have amplified its strength and beauty as a spot for pilgrims. Several Buddha shrines are contained in the ruined brick mausoleum. Chiang Mai’s oldest temple is another must-see. Built in 1297, Wat Chiang Mun houses two sacred and ancient Buddha statues. Be amazed by the Chang Lom chedi, known as the elephant chedi. This mausoleum is rimmed by brick-and-stucco elephants that appear to be supporting on their backs the structure’s upper floors.

Doi Suthep and Hmong Hill Tribe Village

Ascend into the Doi Suthep-Doi Pui mountain park and visit ornate Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. The city of Chiang Mai lies on the plain, but it is dominated by the backdrop of the twin peak Doi Suthep-Doi Pui National Park, rising to 5250 ft. Near the summit of Doi Suthep one finds the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, an important pilgrimage site for Northern Thailand. Its gold-plated chedi can be seen glistening in the morning sunlight from the city below. The temple was founded in the late 1300's, its location apparently chosen by a white elephant which was pursued by the Lanna king Kuena. The elephant ascended the peak, trumpeted, turned around three times, then died ! There is a memorial to the beast on the temple grounds. Ascent today is via a Naga staircase of almost 300 steps, but for a small extra charge one can take a cable car. There are splendid views from the temple over Chiang Mai city. The visit also includes time at a Hmong tribal village.
