Secret Venice: The Exhibition Domus Grimani 1594-2019, Other Hidden Corners of Venice - Private Tour

This tour will take you to some of the most fascinating, yet lesser known attractions in Venice, such as “Palazzo Grimani”, St. Maria Formosa’s church and the ‘Acqua Alta’ bookshop. The itinerary is designed to explore the city off the beaten path, walking through alleys and small bridges across the ‘sestiere’ of Castello, one of the least tourist neighborhoods in Venice. The first site on this route is “Palazzo Grimani” (Grimani Palace), former residence of the patrician Grimani family, which has recently been renovated and open to the public as a ‘residence-museum’. The exhibition ‘Domus Grimani 1594 – 2019’ celebrates the collection returning home after 400 years. The most spectacular room of the palace is the Tribune, the sculpture gallery, featuring stands and niches set in the wall to display some of the finest statues and busts, which were part of one of the largest art collections in the sixteenth-century Venice. Not far from “Palazzo Grimani”, you will be walking through some of the best-preserved medieval lanes, across pointed arches and cobbled streets, the foundations of which were laid many centuries ago. While strolling around in a maze of narrow lanes, you will be heading to Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of the largest and most lively squares in the city. The landmark of this prominent setting is Santa Maria Formosa Church, the first church in Venice dedicated to the Virgin Mary in the 7th century A.D. Just around the corner from Santa Maria Formosa, strolling down streets that are easily overlooked, you will discover a hidden place where you will be thrown back in time. It is the peculiar ‘Acqua Alta’ bookshop, an international bookselling place where piles of volumes are stored on ad-hoc shelves and versatile containers, in an attempt to withstand floods in times of high tide. It is a place where you are literally surrounded by heaps of books in an otherworldly atmosphere, which reminds you of the fairy tales and ghost stories taking place once upon a time. This is a rare opportunity for book lovers to find old and new publications, as well as for visitors to enjoy a peaceful reading spot away from the suffocating crowds. In a nutshell, Secret Venice tour is an excellent choice to discover Venice through alternative, yet spectacular walking paths.

Venice Naval Historical Museum and Castello District

Castello is Venice’s largest and most Western neighbourhood. It features tourist areas, such as ‘Riva degli Schiavoni’ (a popular waterfront promenade) and Biennale Gardens, as well as residential quarters, where local people live and work, away from the crowds. The tour across Castello will take you to the neighbourhood’s historical landmarks, such as Venice’s huge shipyard, which is known as ‘The Arsenal’. The Arsenal played a key role in the history of Venice as maritime republic. At the Arsenal, naval ships were built and repaired for the Serenissima to develop and maintain its dominion over sea trade routes. The Arsenal was divided into a number of districts, including areas for workers and port personnel to live. Land and sea armaments were also manufactured, as part of the shipbuilding industry. The Naval History Museum (Museo Storico Navale), which is the second tour destination, is located in one of Venice’s oldest granaries, within the Arsenal compound. The Museum was established a century ago and it has become the most remarkable institution of the kind in Italy. Ship relics and prototype vessels from the times of the Republic of Venice, and the years of foreign occupation, to the more recent Italian Navy are exhibited in forty rooms on five levels. Through the Museum, you will then enter the ‘Ships Pavilion’, located in an old wooden oar factory, where civil and military vessels of historical value are displayed. After visiting the Naval History Museum and the Ship Pavilion, the tour will take you for a Castello’s cultural walk. This will include an outdoor visit to the magnificent churches and squares that have marked the history of local communities and defined people’s spirituality through the growth and decline of the Republic of Venice until today. Castello’s tour is an excellent opportunity to gain an insight into the socio-economic foundations of Venice’s prosperity and artistic splendour for over a thousand years.

Murano Glassblowing and Burano Lacemaking Tour - Private

Highlights • Unlike other tours of the Venetian islands that rush visitors through three islands, we focus on the best two – Murano and Burano – taking our time here so you can really explore the islands with enough time to shop and explore. • Our tour includes live demonstrations in the art of glassblowing and lace-making led by master artisans for groups no larger than 25 pax at a time. Escape the crowds and chaos of Venice and catch a glimpse of what the city used to be – an island of artisans world-famous for their craft, where traditional skills have been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. Join us on a half-day trip to these timeless islands, so close yet worlds away from crowded Piazza San Marco. After meeting in a central Venice location we’ll start our tour with a short and comfortable boat ride to Murano. There’s a lot to see on the way, and your guide will keep you entertained with a description of the sights as you pass them. It’s no time at all until we’re off the boat again, taking our first steps on beautiful Murano, a small island world-famous for its glass. Once upon a time Murano glassblowers were the only people in Europe who knew how to create a mirror and their skills were so valued that they were banned from leaving the city of Venice under threat of execution. Many things have changed since then, but the craft has stayed the same, as you’ll understand after our first stop – a glassblower’s workshop. Watch a craftsman in action as he goes about his daily business and listen to a description of the process in English while he works – what gives the glass its color? How does silica sand become glass? Which is the most difficult part of his job? This is a real, workaday studio and our experience here will be as authentic as it comes. Afterwards you will have time to browse the huge collection of glass art here and wander the island on your own. We don’t take commission because we would rather pass those savings on to you, so take advantage of fantastic discounts at the souvenir shops, anywhere else around town or don’t shop at all – it’s your choice. Then it’s back on the boat and off to our next stop, Burano. The tiny island of Burano is famous for two reasons. The first is for its houses. Huddled tightly together along streets and canals, each one is painted a different color, with laundry strung up across the narrow streets. Legend has it that fishermen started this trend, painting their houses in bright shades so that they could see home from a distance. But Burano’s major claim to fame is its centuries old tradition of lacemaking. Your guide will take you through the streets of Burano to a small building where women sit working feverishly, stitching lace like their mothers and grandmothers before them. Stay and watch their painstaking work, listen to a full commentary on what, in the age of sewing machines, has become a dying art and then take the time to explore the fascinating lace samples on display. When Michelangelo visited Burano he bought an altarpiece for the brand new Duomo in Milan. You can take a leaf from his book and pick out your own keepsakes or spend your free time winding your way along the kaleidoscopic streets, sampling delicious cookies in local bakeries.
