Moscow Behind the Icons
Your Moscow tour will start at Pushkinskaya Square, a main spot for locals to gather and meet. It is the epicentre of many of Moscow’s historical layers: here you’ll find a monument to Pushkin, the main figure of Russian literature and the big macho of his times; the avantgarde building of the former main soviet newspaper; and even the first McDonald’s in Russia. These “landmarks” all come from very different periods of Russian history, and convey a lot what was happening in the country during their eras. From there, we’re going 100% authentic with a taste of local Russian fast food. We’ll visit a spot that’s popular for selling chebureks, deep-fried pastries filled with minced meat. (Don’t worry if you’re meat-averse — for vegetarians there are chebureks with potatoes and cheese.) Wash it down with a traditional Russian soft drink or tea, and find out why the locals love this place. This snack spot is rarely visited by tourists, so you’re getting the true taste of local life! After our short snack stop, your Moscow tour will continue with a visit to the most unlikely of beautiful sites: a grocery store! Not just any grocery store, though — Eliseevsky is famous for luxurious, neo-baroque interiors. From there, we’ll continue walking along Tverskaya Street, passing by some of Moscow’s main landmarks: the monument to the founder of the city and the governor’s house, and along the way, you’ll learn a bit about Russian theatre, like how it reflects the mysterious Russian soul. We’ll check out an amazing, gigantic piece of ballerina-inspired graffiti art — a modern way to interpret classic Russian ballet. Along the way, we’ll visit a Russian Orthodox Church, where we can light a candle and, if we’re lucky, listen to some beautiful choir songs while your guide shares a few personal stories. (Please note that if you wish to go inside the church, you must be wearing clothing that goes below your knees, and women must have a scarf to cover their head.) Still feeling soothed from our experience at the church, we’ll then whisk you to a secret spot where you can find a moment of absolute silence while still being in the centre of a noisy metropolis. We will finish our Moscow city tour at Red Square, the famous heart of Moscow, where you can spot all the legendary landmarks found in guidebooks. Here is Lenin’s Tomb, housing the body of the Russian revolutionary. You’ll also find the GUM department store, with its outstanding interiors and many soviet attributes — such as kiosks serving the famous soviet ice cream, which for sure should be on your must-try list! And finally, the main highlight of Red Square is, of course, the 16th-century St. Basil’s Cathedral, with its bright and colourful domes — the classic Red Square scene! Get your cameras ready. Throughout it all, your local guide will share stories from local life and history, and point out sites you may want to see during the rest of your time in Moscow. Get some insider tips on what to do next, where to eat, where to go, and how to get there, before bidding farewell to your new friends in Moscow!

Eat like a Russian
Our tour begins in the little-known Danilovsky district of Moscow, which is home to one of the most prominent examples of constructivist architecture in the city. Parisians have long argued about the beauty of the Eiffel Tower; the Muscovites have polarised opinions about the Ship House. Having learned a little about the lives of locals here as we walk, we’ll arrive at the tastiest part of our tour — the food market — and this particular one attracts both trendy chefs and savvy locals alike. Our degustation menu for the day will include sour, spicy, cheesy and sweet treats for your delectation. We hope you’re hungry! We’ll start with nature’s bounty: Russian honey served with herbs and berries. Next it’s on to appetisers and you’ll try the freshest cheeses and curd from the Caucasian region. You’ll be surprised by the number of milk products Russia and other countries from the former USSR used to consume every day. You’ll then try juicy tangerines from Abkhazia if it's winter or delicious apples in summer from the gardens around the city. Then it’s on to two proper Russian delicacies. First is smoked lard, which sounds a bit odd to the western palate, but trust us, it’s rich, fulfilling and delicious! Then, red caviar from the island of Sakhalin, an absolute must-eat while in Moscow. Next we’ll time travel to the Soviet era to take a peep at a typical kitchenette with stripped tablecloth, cut glass and toffees for children, plus plenty of jars of pickles and homemade jams. You can then taste the secret cure to every Russian’s hangover, salty cucumbers and sauerkraut. After these salty delicacies, a Kvas or fruit-drink will banish your thirst. We’ll then head south to explore our favourite dishes from Uzbekistan and Dagestan, pilaf and chudu (scones) with cheese or pumpkin, finishing off with tea and pies. We recommend the sweet pie with poppy seeds. Yummy! Happy and full, you’ll be guided to the metro station or you can of course stay and shop for tasty souvenirs too! Don’t forget to ask your local guide for tips on what else to see, do and where to eat during your stay in magnificent Moscow.

This historic citadel has now cast off its fearsome reputation and its five palaces and four cathedrals can now be visited, allowing you a glimpse of the lavish lifestyles of the tsars and Soviet dictators. The word Kremlin in Russian means fortress and this unconquerable citadel is the cradle of the city, its walls defiantly protecting it for centuries. To this day it remains the seat of power in Russia. Rather than a single monument, the Kremlin is an enigmatic and rather eclectic selection of churches, palaces, squares, walls and towers offering an enormous array of decorative and applied arts. More Than Just Vodka - Spirits Tour
After meeting your local guide, you will head over to Moscow’s hottest district for nightlife: Myasnitskava Street and beyond. This area is a magnet for the hip crowd, where you’ll always find a concert or some other fun activity going on. Its cosy labyrinth of side streets is also full of fabulous places to eat out. We’ll start by visiting a bar that’s well known for its extensive selection of quality craft beers, many of which were brewed locally by the owner. Russian breweries are experimenting not only with exotic fruits, local berries and coffee flavours but also with the packaging and naming of their beers. One of the locals' favourites is even named after a well-known Russian Prime Minister! We’ll try some beer here, alongside some traditional Russian snacks. On the way to the next spot, we’ll pass by a beautiful old building in the chinoiserie style that sits behind the old Central Post Office. It was transformed into an attractive tea shop a number of years ago. Your guide will talk to you about Russian tea-drinking culture and how it differs to that of other tea-drinking nations. Our next stop is a charming and friendly restaurant named after a city by the Black Sea, Odessa. The city is famously cosmopolitan, welcoming people from Jewish, Russian and Ukrainian cultures, amongst others. The restaurant is known for its hearty cuisine, so we’ll enjoy some very typical zakuska appetisers, which pair well with the vodka we’ll be drinking (more on that in a minute). You’ll also get to sample a variety of pickles, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, garlic and cabbage. What is more, you will try one of our favourite snacks, smoked lard (pork fat), which may sound unappetising but trust us when we say it’s super delicious! While you snack away your guide will cover vodka etiquette with you before pairing a few shots with the food. We’ll then take a stroll down the ‘crooked-knee’ street, passing by a spectacular mansion, the first privately owned public library in Moscow. Further along, we’ll walk through Lubyanka square, home of the ex-KGB headquarters. For a long time, the area has been a source of scintillating gossip, cold war anecdotes and even the inspiration for many contemporary art projects. Our tour ends in the mysterious setting of a secret service themed bar. Here we’ll have another traditional Russian drink, nastoika, which is a berry (or sometimes veggie) infused alcoholic beverage. For Russians, this type of drink is usually homemade — something your grandmother in the countryside would lovingly make. We recommend that you try it with fried suluguni, a white Georgian cheese that makes for a superb and traditional Russian appetiser. By the end of the tour, you’ll be well prepared to party like a Russian! Before you go, don’t forget to ask your guide for hints and tips on what else there is to see, drink and eat during your stay in Moscow.

This unsurpassed art gallery, named after its founder, the famous merchant Pavel Tretyakov (1832-1898), houses one of the country’s biggest collections of Russian art. The project was realized in 1881 with an inauguration of the gallery. Tretyakov presented more than 2,000 exhibits to the gallery from his own collection in Moscow, beginning the history of what has become an impressive museum today. After his death in 1898 the collection grew quite rapidly taking on new dimensions following the October Revolution of 1917 when museum collections were privatised and art was transferred from other museums and religious buildings. Private-Novodevichy Convent
Be dazzled by the gold and silver onion domes of Novodevichy Convent in Moscow with this fascinating three-hour tour to this historic Unesco World Heritage Site. This visit is a must if you are interested in architecture, history, art or spirituality. Nestled in picturesque spot on a bend of the River Moscow in southwestern Moscow, this large religious complex was originally founded in 1524 by Grand Prince Vasily III to celebrate the victory over the Lithuanians at the Siege of Smolensk. Such was its breathtaking beauty that it soon became a retreat for the noblest of ladies. Enter through the decorative red and white baroque transfiguration gate-church and take in the wonderful sights inside. The main and oldest structure within the complex is the imposing six–pillared, five-domed Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk. This imposing temple has an astonishingly elaborate interior decorated with numerous frescoes from the 16th century. Of particular note is the octagonal bell tower, a later addition, which is considered by many to be the finest in all of Moscow. For a long time its 72 metres also made it the tallest structure in the city. The other churches and buildings within the complex are also of great interest. The striking red and white colours of the baroque Muscovite style contrast beautifully with the blue sky and offer a very photogenic scene. The onion-domed Church of Assumption is a prime example as are the Church of St Amvrosiy Mediolanskiy and the Old Refectory.
