Private Tour: Visit to the ancient citadel of Histria
Leave hotel to see the 1st attested town on the Romanian territory. Istria, situated 30 miles (55 kilometers) north of Constanta was founded in 656 B.C. by Greek merchants from Miletus, as a commercial colony on the western shore of the Black Sea. It was the first of its kind and it developed later as one of the most powerful colonies in the Black Sea, being able to mint its own coins as early as the 5th century AD. Apart from the excellent conditions offered by the gulf in which Istria had been built, the colony had abundant fisheries and fertile hinterland which would produce an abundance of grains. The city was active until the late 6th Century A. D., making it the only colony to see uninterrupted activity for over 1300 years. The vestiges of Istria include 4th century AD defense walls, ruins of structures from the Hellenistic, early Roman and late Roman Period, the remains of public buildings, baths, temples, secular basilicas, Christian churches, shops, workshops, a. o. The museum beside the ruins displays a unique collection of highly valuable archaeological finds from the area and sheds some light on the local history. Return to Constanta and the hotel.
