Full Day Discover Waitomo

Come and experience one of New Zealand’s natural wonders in this full day trip to the magical caves of Waitomo. Enjoy a guided tour through the long galleries and lofty chambers illuminated by thousands of tiny lights from the glow worms suspended from the cave ceiling. The tour starts when you are picked up from your hotel early in the morning. Sit back and enjoy the rolling farmland of the Waikato region as we drive southwards from Auckland, heading for the Waitomo cave system. The name Waitomo comes from the Maori “wai” water and “tomo”, hole or shaft and the caves were first systematically explored in the late 19th Century. You’ll find an impressive variety of wierd and wonderful rock formations that took millions of years to form. The guided tour will take you through three different levels, linked by the tomo, a 16m deep limestone shaft. After passing through the network of tunnels known as the Catacombs we’ll descend to the Banquet Chamber where you can still early visitors’ cooking fires in the smoke on the ceiling of the chamber. Admire the amazing acoustics at the massive cavern known as the Cathedral before boarding a boat for an unforgettable ride on the underground Waitomo River through the Glow Worm Grotto. The only illumination here comes from millions of tiny glow worms creating a sky of living lights, making for a truly unforgettable spectacle. Following the tour there will be some time for an optional lunch or for exploring the fascinating Visitor Centre before boarding the bus for the trip back to Auckland.

Day Trip to Coromandel

Experience Coromandel Peninsula, a favourite holiday destination for many New Zealanders. Its amazing landscape consists of a mountainous, forest-covered backbone, with the Pacific Ocean on the east, and the sheltered bays and coves of the Hauraki Gulf on the west. Spend the day in this unique area steeped in history associated with kauri logging, gold mining and stunning coastlines. A 90-minute drive south-east of Auckland is Coromandel’s main town, Thames, where we take a short break. Then the spectacular western coast road leads us to Coromandel Township where renowned New Zealand potter, Barry Brickell had his studio. Ride his personally designed and built mountain railway system on a memorable journey through the rugged landscape. Your next stop is for a quiet stroll in pristine rainforest to view some of the magnificent kauri trees that once covered the Coromandel Peninsula. The journey continues across the mountain divide and descends towards the east coast beaches where we stop for lunch. Visit Hot Water Beach where hot water bubbles up in the sand and dig your own hot tub right next to the lapping waves. A short drive away is Cathedral Cove, where the Pacific Ocean washes through a natural arch onto a white sandy beach backed by white cliffs. There is a half hour downhill walk to the beach from here which means of course the walk back is uphill! Your journey home to Auckland heads back over the hills by a different route.
