During the vice royal period, Chapultepec was taken as a place of rest and leisure, for which it was built, at the base of the hill, on the foundations of what was the residence of Moctezuma II Xocoyotzin, a palace that gave shelter to numerous viceroys and distinguished visitors for more than two centuries. However, one explosion in the middle of the eighteenth century, caused serious damage to the building, led to the decision to build the new palace on the top of the hill, right on the site of an old chapel dedicated to the archangel San Miguel.
