Belvedere Palace and Museum

Belvedere means ‘beautiful sight’ and there is perhaps none more beautiful in Vienna than the Belvedere palace and gardens. Commissioned as his summer retreat by war hero Prince Eugene of Savoy in the late 17th century, it reflects his tastes as an art connoisseur. This baroque architectural jewel consists of two palaces, Upper and Lower Belvedere. The Upper contains world's largest Klimt collection and Lower, where Prince Eugene’s apartments and staterooms were, today houses Austrian art from the Middle Ages to the present. The palace was designed by the renowned architect Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The new 21er Haus museum is not only extremely interesting from an architectural point of view but is also intensively engaged in Austrian art of the 20th and 21st centuries. The impressive building was constructed by leading architect Karl Schwanzer as the Austria pavilion for the World Exhibition in 1958 and opened as a museum for the art of the 20th century in Vienna in 1962. The orangery was originally a winter garden with heating system for orange trees. After the death of Prince Eugene and the relocation of the orangery to Schönbrunn, the plant house was renovated and used as stall. After 1918 a part of the Modern Gallery and, from 1953 till 2007, the museum of middle age art were both housed in this building. In 2007, the architect Susanne Zottl designed a modern exhibition hall as a white cube in the orangery. Start/opening time Lower Belvedere,Orangerie and Upper Belvedere daily from 10am to 6pm (Except Lower Belvedere/Orangerie on Wednesday 10am to 9pm). Palace Stables daily 10am to 12pm. 21er Haus daily 10am to 6pm (Except on Wednesday 10am to 9pm).

Timeless Tunes of Mozart and Strauss by the Vienna Residence Orchestra

Therein you will be able to sit back, relax and enjoy the evocative and timeless music of the world famous composers Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss, You will be able to enjoy other famous works by Antonio Vivaldi, Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven. The Vienna Residence Orchestra is a Viennese chamber orchestra with a long tradition of performing the ‘Wiener Klassik’ in its most purest form. The Orchestra has been performing beautiful concerts at some of the city’s finest concert halls for many decades. In 1991 the orchestra was appointed as the official representative of the City of Vienna for the celebration of the bicentenary of Mozart’s death and also performs regularly at the ‘Vienna International Festival’. The Orchestra now brings to life the popular Mozart and Strauss concerts day after day at the majestic Vienna Palais. The programme includes some of the most famous and beautiful classics by these great composers. Many of the performances have been accompanied by world famous opera singers and ballet dancers; in fact, already back in 1992 Rudlof Nurejev was invited to be a guest conductor and was such a great success that subsequently he was followed by many more renowned performers from the world of music and dance. A night listening to this superb orchestra will surely be the highlight of your trip to Vienna so be sure not to miss this memorable opportunity the sounds of which will reverberate in your mind for many years to come. The concert: The Strauss and Mozart concert lasts 60 minutes, with no break. The program is dedicated to Viennese Classical Music. Apart from works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Strauss, Antonio Vivaldi, Johannes Brahms and Ludwig van Beethoven, you will also discover some gems like music from Franz Lehár or Robert Stolz. Excerpts from the program are “Summer” from the “the Four Seasons” by Antonio Vivaldi, “a little Night Music” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “the Romance nr 2 in F Major” by Ludwig van Beethoven, or “the Radetzky March” by Johann Strauss. The venue: The performance usually takes place in the "Rosenkavalier Hall" at the Palais Auersperg, a historic Palace in the Inner City built in 1706 and located right next to Underground Station "Volkstheater". The Palais Auersperg played a key role in Austrian and Viennese History and with its beautiful private Park and its baroque Halls it is a testimony to the old "imperial Vienna". The Rosenkavalier Hall in the Palais Auersperg is one of the unique historical concert venues with an oval-cut Hall. In old times when classical music was performed only for those invited from the Prince it was important that every guest had a good view and that the music could be heard even without amplifiers. Seating: Like most of the historical concert locations in Vienna, the Rosenkavalier Hall has no numbered seats. You will be seated by the evening personnel within your category. If you booked your tickets together you will always be seated together. The evening box opens 30 minutes before the concert starts. We advise to be on time. Dresscode: There is no strict dress code for most of the classical concerts in Vienna. Vienna Mozart Concerts at Musikverein

An unmistakable Viennese sound resulting from its long-standing concert practice distinguishes the Vienna Mozart Orchestra as one of the most experienced Mozart’s interpreters of our time. The costumes and wigs worn by the musicians at the Vienna Mozart Concerts are valuable reproductions of formal dresses from the time of Mozart. The composition of the program shows the musical exercise of “Musical academies“ from the late 18th century. Single movements from symphonies or solo concerts are performed together with best known and popular arias and duets. The venues of the Vienna Mozart Concerts are the very musical landmarks of Vienna and belong to the most prominent musical addresses of the world at large. The Vienna Mozart Orchestra was found in 1986 by musicians from the best Viennese orchestras and chamber music ensembles. The work of in Salzburg born and in Vienna resident Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Salzburg 1756 – Vienna 1791) constitutes the leitmotif for the 30 musicians. With the annually from April till October in Vienna occurring concert series “Vienna MOZART Concerts in period costumes” the orchestra ties up to the tradition of the 18th century as concerts were called “Musical Academies”. The Vienna Mozart Concerts at Musikverein’s Golden Hall and Brahms Hall hold for many years now an important place in Vienna’s event calendar which cannot be imagined without them.

Danube and Wachau Valley Tour

Experience the natural beauty of the Danube and Wachau valleys with this romantic day trip that takes in charming villages, steep vineyards, ruined castles, magnificent monasteries and during the summer months, a spectacular cruise along the great river itself. This is a tour that has it all: scenery, nature, culture, history and architecture. Highlights - Explore equally jaw dropping scenery outside of Vienna city centre - Enjoy a lunch or cruise depending on the season - See one of Austria’s most famous baroque buildings Few rivers have inspired artists as much as the Danube, which was immortalised by Strauss’ waltz. As the river winds its way through central and south-eastern Europe, it creates valleys of breathtaking beauty; a landscape of steep banks laden with vineyards overlooked by hillside hamlets and castles. See the tiny village of Durnstein and the admire the remnants of its once great castle, where Richard the Lionheart was held ransom on his way back to England to fight with Robin Hood (or so some legends say). The views over the Danube and the valley are spellbinding. During the summer season, hop aboard for a 90-minute cruise on the blue Danube and enjoy a new perspective of this picturesque valley. The Wachau Valley is a Unesco World Heritage Site famed for its lush verdant landscapes and rustic towns but most of all for the quality of its wines, especially the young whites. At Melk, discover the beautiful Benedictine abbey, one of Austria’s most famous baroque buildings. Among its many truly outstanding attractions are the impossibly golden library, the fine frescos and the speckled spiral staircase. In winter, instead of the cruise, we enjoy a lunch. Others: The Danube cruise takes place from April 16 to October 26.
